This is by far the best edition of the Steamer I have had the privilege of writing in two years. Before I get on with the mushy stuff, let me tell you some things you need to know about this issue. The only things that ever get into Steamer news, provided I'm the only one writing the stories, are threads that I've read. If you feel you wrote a superfantastiche thread that deserves a Pullitzer prize then by all means, link me and I'll write something about it, provided I feel it's newsworthy.
That being said, there were less than a handful of people who made this issue, and under the circumstances, I believe we did a phenomenal job. I know I spent about as much effort on this as I did my English term paper... Anyways, I've noticed nothing has really changed here in two years. Everyone still gives bad reviews to good movies, people still jump at the first chance to insult each other, and I've seen more NSFW material in the almost two weeks I've been here than I think I did in the entire last two years Anyway, if you have any questions, comments, red herrings, e-mail me at editor@theweeklysteamer.com

Over the summer we were met with an influx of new additions to GAT: the endless comic, the wiki, the imageshack upload feature, and several other cool things. However, as of late we haven't had any major changes. There is no longer a reason to visit the arcade. What we need is change. Something that will bring about a turn in the direction towards greatness. I believe that what we need is innovation. Innovation is the key to resparking GAT. This paper is one step in the right direction. However, we need more: for one thing, how about giving us a reason to keep visiting the arcade? When the arcade first came out, everybody loved it. The games kept coming in, and everybody was competing for the high scores. With people such as Rhett who have unbeatable scores, there is no reason to keep playing. What I suggest is a monthly high score reset. This will give a reason to keep competing and keep playing. That, in combination with new games would be exactly what we need to rekindle that fire. Another thing that we need is a way to get rid of these annoying ad-bots. They’re annoying and they waste everybody's time.

I'll tell you how to make a good star trek game: Ignore all the federation mission crap and set player as an unnamed civilian of any species, and let the player decide for himself what factions to join, places to explore, and goals to accomplish.


Star Trek: Legacy is not this game. In fact, Star Trek Legacy fucking sucks. It's awful. In a long history of steaming shit star trek games, it's the steamiest and shittiest.
Here's how I imagine the production of ST:L went down:


Developer: Hey Bethesda, we want you to publish our new star trek game. It's gonna be great. Players will get to play and explore through all five major star trek time lines: enterprise, original series, next generation, DS9, and Voyager. We'll have professional voice acting, a compelling story, and beautiful visuals. Game play will be fantastic: We'll set the player in total command of the famous federation vessels from the series. They'll be able to fly around in a unique blend of arcade spaceflight with realistic simulation, making for fun and exciting combat and exploration.


Bethesda: Wow that sounds awesome. Ok we'll publish you.


*two years later*


Bethesda: So...guys...how's that star trek game we're financing going? Are..uh...are you gonna be done soon?


Dev: *party noises in background* DUDE I'M SO FUCKING WASTED RIGHT NOW AHAHAHAHAHA JERRY JUST FUCKED A GOAT


Bethesda: you guys have six months to finish or we're gonna cancel the project.

Dev: oh shit oh shit of man guys playtime is over oh shit we gotta make this game oh shit, um, ok, well, lets steal all the background space graphics from the movies and TV shows, that'll save some time...and...uh, hey look, we can cut and paste AI files directly from Star Trek Armada. Don't bother renaming them, they'll never notice, even if that game is nine years old. Man, making a control system for a space game is HARD. Oh well, everyone knows consoles have shitty controls anyway. Oh god we need voice acting too? Lets just get some guys from marketing down stairs to do it and use clips from the show for the rest of it.

Seriously. There isn't any aspect of the game that isn't complete shit. The controls are horrible and can't be remapped without editing game files. The graphics (those of them that haven't been reused from other media) suck. The AI is, as mentioned, a direct copy from Armada. There are no physics to speak of. If you fly your ship into a plant you bounce off of it like rubber. The missions are boring and laughably easy, since despite the fact that after an intense battle your ship is covered in hull breeches and explosions, you can repair back to full health in about thirty seconds.


All the "cool" stuff from star trek: transporting, cloaking, hailing, etc, can only be done at exact points in the game when it tells you to, and even then, it's pretty meaningless. For example, in a good star trek game, you might be fighting a superior force, so you try to disable their sheields and beam an away team on board. That'd be pretty cool, right? Can't do it in armada. If you try to use the transporter at any point in the game other then when specifically instructed to, you'll get a "transport could not activate" message. Good to know futuristic technology only works during scripted events.


Combat is horrible as well. Asssuming you manage to figure out how to work the horrible controls and actually get a target lock, you'll spend most of combat flying your starship around in circles trying to get it at the right angle to be able to fire your phasers or torpedos. Your ships turns like a fucking cruise yaht, though, so it's actually easier just to power down your engines and wait in place for the shitty enemy AI to fly past you in it's circle. You can theoretically target subsystems, except that in order to do that, you need to have a perfect target lock and click on the subsystem icon you want to target, which means taking your hand off the keyboard, which means losing your target lock. After four hours of playing, I managed to do it only once.


And forget about giving orders to the other ships in your fleet. You can do about as much as "go here" and that's it. The rest just depends on hoping like hell that if you select all the other ships, they decide to copy your behavior and maybe follow you into combat. Sometimes they do, and sometimes they don't.


I've heard online that the code is a mess. "Numerous examples of extra coding left in the game files were found, such as one file that read: "Not For Release //comment this out before release" and "// code will have to be changed when we are putting in real components concerning locations" Also for some reason the game files include several pictures of one of the devlopers pet goat. The game is also buggy as hell and can be expected to randomly crash or lockup whenever it feels like it.


I didn't bother trying to play it online for two reasons: The first is that the game dosn't work online out of the box. You have to patch it. I don't know if the patch fixes the online problems, and I don't really care, because flying around in circles holding down the phaser key would be just as boring against another player as it is against the computer.
Of course, I only reviewed the PC version. Gamespy, IGN, etc, all gave it horrible scores, averaging about 3.5 out of ten. The xbox version is getting 8 out of ten in some places, which only serves to reinforce my belief that console games are shit and console gamers are just too used to it to notice.


Overall score: 2 out of 10. It gets a 2 instead of a 1 because phasers are cool.

Night at the Museum Review

I went to the theater last night not knowing what to expect. I knew that with people like Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson the movie would be funny. And the fact that the comic genius Robin Williams had a part helped me to guess that it was going to be a good movie. And for the most part, I was right. Night at the Museum is a film for all ages. There is humor for just about anybody in this movie. Just ask the fat ass guy two rows in front of me who kept scratching himself and yelling for them to make it louder.

The movie is a Disneyesque style film, Ben Stiller is down on his luck, and with the help of the historical characters in the film he manages to turn his life around. Not the most original story, but definitely a fine implementation of it. Out of a possible 11 fingers up (I was born near Chernobyl), I give it an 8.

No joke. I was looking forward to this movie quite a bit.

It is the worst acting Ive seen in a movie, except for Paulie, in a very very long time. I dont think anybody has ever accused Stallone of being an actor, but if they had, they would be embarrassed of themselves. He was Rocky, he did decent at bringing that back, but 20 percent of the movie was unwatchable. His acting is horrible.

The whole girl and Rocky thing was confusing as hell. Extremely uncomfortable. They didnt explain how Adrian died. They never said what his son does as a living, yet he is one of the main characters, and is always shown at work or with work buddies. Rocky looks like complete shit. Not even his body, which he is in obviously great shape for his age, but his face. Sly has had so much surgery, he is just beat up beyond repair.

The montage was literally 1 minute long. Rocky is known for its montages. (i may have spelled that wrong)

The bad guy...isnt so bad. He doesnt do anything to make you hate him. Quite the opposite actually. You want to hate his managers, but thats it. The guy gets no respect, and generally gives respect to Rocky.

The fight itself...absolutely the worst fight in the Rocky series. Yes, even worse than Rocky V. Nothing was suspenseful or exciting about it. It looked so incredibly corny. And the cameo by Mike Tyson nearly ruined what little satisfaction the movie had going for it. Even the announcers, who are the HBO announcers and are generally pretty good at their real job, were horrible.

The ending, although a feel good thing, was lame.

If you want to watch a good Rocky movie, that has good acting, good story, and has the ability to really touch you, watch Rocky. As in, Rocky 1. This movie sucked.

3/10. 1 1/2 stars.

they suuuuuck

first of all you have to figure out how to install em. then once you do and get it working, you have to figure out how to uninstall it once it's been a few months and you've forgotten and you want to remove a drive. Then after that you have to save the little plastic rails in case you ever want to reinstall a drive in that bay.

then you got very unintuitive ones. mine you just screw the rails onto the drive and slide it in. then to take it out you just squeeze the little bits on the rails together and pull it out
