Double Major + Minor...

Okay SO, right now, I'm at Manhattan College as most of you know and studying (yes, laugh ahead, I don't care much) Peace Studies. I'm thinking about also majoring in International Studies and minoring in English.

Thoughts?

minoring in English won't prepare you for any kind of serious writing.

In fact, neither of your majors will significantly prepare you for your chosen field.

I'd echo earlier sentiment here and say you should devote your college time to learning useful skills, like other languages.

well, you won't need fantastic writing skills to write about what you're passionate about, just passable. you'll never be a bestseller anyways... best you can hope for is some publication based on content.

why not pick up international studies, and start down the major path, and if you get overwhelmed, turn it into a minor? and how many bloody credit hours are you taking, like 18-21?

i'd say this is a stupid move, but if you're going to do what you plan on doing, you have to be passionate about it, so you might be one of the few college students who can pull off that kind of a classload. and it's not like you'll hit an organic chem class and get destroyed at some point.

and yea, you'll be poor forever. i'd say that double major + minor, plus regular workouts so you can marry rich... pretty much your only hope for success.

I don't want to write about my endeavors... I just want to write stories and novels and just you know, creative writing.

i'd add in english little by little if you have time. double major will keep you busy enough without adding on to it.

you can always take creative writing courses on the side later on or something.

It depends. Some schools and majors are super easy to double up on. Each school has different requirements.

what you're doing now will probably get you into law school which is what you're going to end up doing once you realize all your other dreams are bullshit and the only way to feasibly work with foreign nations is to get a foreign law degree, so keep on keeping on.

forget the french and take mandarin chinese. Far more useful in the long run and impressive on a resume.

That is absolutly what I'm saying. Matter of fact I dont even think she'll end up "working in her field" cause there aint no field for "peace" that I know of.

She'll end up being a sub or para and getting her masters at night like everyone else does.

eh, i was picturing her doing some grassroots campaigning or something for a while. some people find a non-profit they fall in love with and work for for a long while. she might get lucky enough for that, or be passionate enough to make that work.

which is why the next 4 years are telling for her. if she's serious about wanting this kind of thing, she'll have to fight tooth and nail for it and be paid peanuts for her efforts, so might as well see if she has it in her now.

I don't think you guys really get what Peace Studies is. It's not all about peace and stuff, there's economy, government, and all that shit too. And I will get work in my "field"...because it's kinda broad, especially if I double major. And especially if I want to work in a non-profit organization, peace corps, too.

yea, everything you just said can be summed up as non-profit, since none of what you're talking about is marketable as a product of some kind. you'd have to work the non-profit sectors for quite a while before you could get a job at somewhere like the UN.

and you get paid about the same for non-profit as you do for social work: total and utter crap.

if you're thinking otherwise, i'd look real seriously at future possible professions for your majors. as in, ask around.
